San Diego, Balboa Park, August 2005

I had never been to Balboa Park in San Diego before. I was pleasantly surprised! I called it "Disneyland for nerds" because of all the art, science, and cultural museums being located in one place. I must be a nerd due to the fact that I liked it!

Because it is smaller than Golden Gate Park in San Francisco (with which I am more familiar) it is more accessible and less crowded. The art collection in the main museum, the San Diego Museum of Art is impressive, something else that greatly surprised me. They have a wonderful collection of American art. I have become quite comfortable with the European Masters and American photography. But as of late, I have taken up an interest in American art, particularly painting.

The American painting in this collection is robust, enjoyable, and of high quality. Some of it even made me laugh, especially the etchings by Sandow Birk which were showing at that time. I definitely have to go back because there was more that I didn't have time to see!
