Slice of Americana
Something about this sign reminded me of the cool types of stuff we used to see in the 1970s. I remember going to Bob's Big Boy when I was a kid and thinking that the big fat statue of "Bob" was cool. I also remember driving by the diner that was in a train car down in San Luis Obispo and wishing my parents would stop there so we could eat in it. They never did. They don't even have a real "Jack" at Jack in the Box anymore or a real bell at Taco Bell. Just boring old signs. I haven't seen a life size Ronald McDonald for ages. That is such a disappointment.
We had a garage in my home town that had an old race car on top of it. It is still there. I remember wondering how it got up there. Along the road to the San Jose Airport is a big gorilla that stands there waving at drivers. I swear that I can't help looking at it every time I go by. I can't even tell you what he is advertising, But I know him when I see him! When I was a kid, we would go by the drive-in movies along the highway in Modesto and I would watch the big screens until I couldn 't see the movies anymore.
I am usually the one driving these days. So I don't get to watch for interesting things along the road and finding good signs is rare unless you are in Vegas or Times square. I liked the octopus. He turned around and around. Whoever created him was a real craftsman with imagination, skill, and a good sense of humor. I give that person an 8 handed salute!
