Switzerland in Black and White

Switzerland is a country that in late summer had such vivid color and light that photographing for black and white is a real challenge. It may be easier in winter.

Estavyer-Le-Lac after the rain

These biking/walking trails near our home were build by the Swiss military as security roads. Switzerland is a practical as well as peaceful nation. They are neutral, but one of the most militarized nations in the world. In fact, they manufacture the world's weapons, even some of ours. The moral here is to avoid trouble, but to be prepared if trouble finds you.

St. Peter's Cathedral, Geneva
The first cathedral on the site was built in 1000. Construction on the present building began in 1160 and lasted 150 years. The site itself has been occupied since the 4th century.

Rooftops of Bern

An old Chocolate Factory, Bern
Today it is a private residence, and has been for many years. Deniz remembers passing by this home with his grandfather as a small boy and wondering what happened to all the chocolate.

Playing in front of Parliament, Bern
In front of the Swiss Parliament building is a open space with an odd type fountain. Water shoots up randomly from the paving stones and the children all run to catch the water shoots, like a game of Wackamo. I thought it was a wonderful message to send to the citizens that Parliament could be a place of whim and fun- a summer playground for the nation's children.

A Harley, Bern
A piece of America far from home.

A grapevine, Montreux

If you look closely, the gnarly wood seems to form a dragon or snake with it's mouth open.
